Who are we?

BIG, previously Beauty Industry Organisation group was founded in July 2019 with the aim of collaboratively working together to raise the profile and status of the “beauty sector”, consider issues facing the sector and develop an action plan to tackle them, aided by the Beauty Aesthetic and Wellbeing APPG

Objectives

The objectives of BIG are to : 
  • promote the beauty, aesthetic, holistic and wellness industries and to raise awareness of its economic contribution to the UK economy
  • promote and define “the beauty sector” the scope, role and encompassing industries
  • promote the industry as a route into flexible careers, especially for female entrepreneurs
  •  identify, establish and promote  career pathways, prerequisites, standardisation and progression routes from level 2 to level 7 for “beauty sector” professionals
  • To ensure that beauty professionals understand the potential risks associated with “beauty sector” treatments and service and do not provide treatments they are not adequately trained or qualified for
  • To work with insurance companies to ensure they do not provide cover for anyone who has not had adequate training or who provides treatments in unsuitable premises or settings
  • To work with CAP/ASA to develop enforcement notices to support the regulation of beauty courses that misrepresent the content, level and competency achieved
  • To promote the safety of the industry and consumer safety, leading on and supporting education and awareness raising campaigns
  • To promote physical and mental wellbeing of beauty professionals and to encourage individuals to make healthy choices throughout their lives

Our Chairperson 

Caroline Larissey is the BIG group chairperson  

Caroline Larissey is a highly respected and experienced professional, currently employed as the Director of Quality and Standards at the National Hair and Beauty Federation (NHBF), the largest UK trade association for hairdressing, barbers, beauty, and aesthetics businesses. Caroline is an expert in her field, with a distinguished career spanning over 20 years. Her extensive knowledge of regulatory compliance, industry best practices, quality management systems, and standards has earned her a reputation as a dedicated and results-driven individual.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the BIG are to: 
  • Provide a united and representative voice from beauty, nails, aesthetic and wellness industry
  • To work actively as key partners, drawing upon the expertise of each organisation in a mutually agreeable manner to support the beauty, nails, aesthetic and wellness industry
  • To jointly publicise and promote the work and aims of the group in order to raise public and professional awareness of best practice. 
  • To work collaboratively at all times to establish, maintain and further the credibility and reputation of the group. 
  • To establish and agree Task and Finish groups to oversee areas of development or policy 
  • To collect and share information to inform future innovation and development 
  • To actively engage with other relevant stakeholders to order to achieve the groups objectives 
  • To direct and feed into the work of the Beauty, Aesthetics and Wellbeing APPG

 

Implementing BIG  

To support ongoing good working relationships between  BIG members we will aim to:   
  1. acknowledge and respect each other’s different responsibilities, accountability structures and frameworks
  2. identify what degree of joint working would be appropriate in any given circumstance, recognising that this may develop or change over time 
  3. continue to collaborate to develop a richer understanding of our respective roles and responsibilities                                                                        
  4. establish and maintain effective channels of communication and intelligence sharing where applicable
  5. aim through discussion to explain and understand the reasons for any differences of view; where there is benefit in doing so, take advantage of the opportunities for co-ordinated and shared scheduling of activities where appropriate, and 
  6. notify each other in a timely and appropriate way where there is a likelihood of significant announcements and developments which may impact on each other’s key areas of work, and where these matters are confidential, we will respect that confidentiality.
  7. inform each other in a timely and appropriate manner on policy and developments, engaging in early dialogue on matters that will impact on the work of the other. 
  8. proactively seek solutions to avoid or mitigate the effects of any disagreement that may impact on the delivery of either organisations. 
  9. and inform stakeholders about our relationship including publishing a copy of this Memorandum of Understanding on our respective websites.

 

The Group will be mindful of competition law and will not undertake any activities which could prevent, restrict or distort competition.  Each group member is responsible for making its own business decisions, without reference to other group members.

BIG is not intended to, or shall be deemed to establish any partnership or joint venture between the group members, constitute any group member as an agent of other group members, nor authorise any group member to make or enter any commitments on behalf of other group members
